As mental health professionals, legal and ethical challenges are all around us. Reporting obligations, duty to warn and protect, documenting challenges, confidentiality responsibilities, practicing within scope, record keeping, informed consent, dual roles, diagnosis and treatment planning, professional relational boundaries, objectivity, doing no harm, and so on! Not to mention how complicated some of these dynamics become when inviting multiple members of a family system into the therapeutic process! If you sometimes feel overwhelmed by the legal and ethical challenges that accompany mental health work with families, you are not alone!

In this continuing education workshop, we will address the unique legal and ethical challenges being faced by mental health professionals who support and treat family systems. This program will provide participants with exposure to real-world dilemmas, with engaging discussion regarding principles for problem recognition, definition, exploration and decision making. Methods for anticipation and prevention of legal and ethical concerns related to family systems will also be reviewed. Through this program, participants will have a better understanding of how to effectively anticipate, prevent, identify and resolve legal and ethical concerns in their professional practice.
